CARE
Optimising Motivation in PE and Sport.
Children across the country are struggling with motivation, confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. The Youth Sport Trust stated in their Class of 2035 report (Sept 2021) that children’s relationship with Physical Education and sport is changing. They recommend that teachers need to be better trained to drive sports engagement. This includes methods for encouraging & developing genuine sustained engagement, creating active school environments and providing values & skills led sporting activities.
CARE is a research and evidence based CPD workshop for teachers & coaches, that offers practices and strategies to directly tackle these issues. CARE focuses on four principles of the learning environment leading to higher quality motivation, increases in skill level, confidence, self-esteem, wellbeing and desirable behaviours that foster lifelong engagement in PE and sport.

The story of CARE
I’ve always been intrigued about children’s motivation and as a teacher and coach I knew that the environment in which they learned was critical. At the time, knowledge about learning climates was limited to a theoretical construct for classrooms (TARGET). I tasked myself to create an approach specific to PE & sport. This became my PhD, where I was able to test and validate CARE. I was delighted to see its significant impact on all children’s motivation and a range of other behaviors.
Enhancing the learning environment is critical if we want children to have better physical education & sports experiences and keep them engaged. I’m confident you will be able to integrate the CARE principles into your sessions and will enjoy seeing all the benefits it brings.
